Bread Sticks
I grew up with my mom making these breadsticks, and I would always sneak bread stick after bread stick when she wasn’t looking. To this day these are some of my favorites, and my go to bread stick recipe.
Ingredients
1 cup milk, scalded
3 Tbsp. shortening
2 tsp. salt
3 1/2 Tbsp. sugar
1 cup warm water
1/4 cup flour
1/2 Tbsp. sugar
1 Tbsp. yeast
5 cups flour, approximately
1/3 cup butter, melted
Salad Supreme
Grated Parmesan Cheese
Instructions
1
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
2
Scald milk. While hot, add shortening, salt, and 3 1/2 Tbsp. sugar; cool. Blend warm water with 1/4 cup flour and 1/2 Tbsp. sugar. Gently stir in yeast. Set aside 5-10 minutes.
3
Combine milk mixture and water mixture with 2 cups of the flour. Beat until smooth and well mixed. Add the rest flour to make a moderately stiff dough. Knead on a lightly floured surface until smooth and satiny. Place dough in lightly oiled bowl. Cover and allow to rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
4
Roll out dough onto oiled surface into a rectangular shape, about 1/2 inch thick. Cut into 16 strips with a pizza cutter.
5
Melt butter, then spread a small amount over the cookie sheet. Place strips side by side, then brush the tops with the remaining butter. Sprinkle lightly with Salad Supreme, then heavily with Parmesan cheese. Cover and allow to rise until doubled in bulk.
6
Bake at 400 degrees for about 13 minutes, or until done.
